Standard 7: Professional Growth and Development

This section has materials and evidence of my growth and development as a musician and an educator.

As an educator...

K/D- What is Pop? Lesson #1

K/D- What is Pop? Lesson #2

Contained in the first video is lesson I taught at Westlake Boys High School in Auckland, New Zealand to a 3rd Form Class (equivalent to 8th grade in the US). I had the lead teacher observe me and offer her advice. The second video is the same lesson taught to another 3rd Form class later that day which demonstrates how I am very open and willing to acecpt advice and criticism in order to make sure I am educating my students as best I can. It shows how I believe growing as an educator means finding out ways to better your techniques.

As a Jazz Performer...

P- Excerpt from the tune "Butterfly"

This is an .mp3 excerpt from a performance I gave in the IU Jazz Ensemble. I am on the fluglehorn in the head of the tune and I also take a lengthy solo. This is the program for the concert, I am soloing also on other tunes as well.

As an Arranger...

Sometimes when directors or conductors want to perform a certain work, the repertoire is just not out there for their specific medium (or it may be sub-par). This demonstrates my ability to not let this hinder an experience to play any piece of music by arranging it for the ensemble I have: in both these cases, concert band.

K- Pictures at an Exhibition: Baba Yaga, Great Gate of Kiev

This is my first concert band arrangement. I took Mussorgsky's piano solo and transcribed it for concert band.

K- Marche Slave

This is my second arrangement. My arranging has matured the more I do it and the second example here can show this progression. (It also shows I appear to have a thing for Russian composers).
